I relistened to Ep4 Cataracts And Hurricanoes the other day and I'm thinking about the similarities between the events of that episode and the events of Fisher's death (as heard in the recordings from Lovelace's mission in Ep18 Happy To Be Of Assistance).

In both cases, a Hephaestus crew member - a man who doesn't know that the Decima virus is running through his veins - is on a spacewalk. It should have been fairly routine, just adjusting something on the outside of the station. But weather in space can be unpredictable. There is a sudden unexpected emergency. Solar flares or meteors are about to hit the station - and the officer outside of it. The commander orders the officer to get inside immediately. He protests at first, not appreciating the danger (Eiffel: "What’s the big deal? There’s been like a hundred flares since we got here." / Fisher: "I'm almost done with the-") But soon it is clear that the situation is life-threatening. So the commander puts on a spacesuit and goes out into the danger, because she wouldn't even consider leaving her crew member out there to die.

One commander comes back with her unconscious officer in her arms. The other comes back with a broken arm and the weight of grief. Fisher dies, and it's the first of many deaths on Lovelace's Hephaestus mission. Eiffel survives, and it's the first of many life-or-death situations that we hear him making it through against the odds. And really it's just down to luck. Both Eiffel and Fisher had a skilled Commander willing to risk their life to save them. Both of them just needed to make it inside, and one did, and the other didn't. 

Eiffel almost died the way Fisher did. Later he'll almost die the way Lambert and Hui did. It's another echo between the two Hephaestus missions, like the comparisons Lovelace reflects on in Variations on a Theme: "New people [...] Same hell. Same star." / "the new gang. [...] Same as the old gang."  / "The more things change, the more they stay the same." Fisher's death reinforces how close Eiffel comes to dying in Cataracts and Hurricanoes; like all the deaths of Lovelace's crew, it reinforces the idea of the Hephaestus as a place of danger and chance and ghosts, a place that holds cycles of suffering.

I really like your TBHK mermaid AU and I'm curious about some of the characters that were only mentioned or haven't appeared. Could you tell more about the Kou, Mitsuba and Hanako in the AU? And are there any details about the setting any worldbuilding you might share?

Yeees! There are worldbuilding details I never got to share (I love mermaids a lot) so here you go:

I only mentioned in the fic that there are mermaids that eat people, and mermaids that don't. But these are two categories, there are many subcategories/species of mermaids in this world, most man eaters have a humanoid appearance but some use magic to blend with their surroundings, reling on their speed and using gold as lure to ambush sailors. And some harmless species look a bit more humanoid to protect themselves (humans are less likely to kill what's cute or familiar over some 'creepy fish')

The Minamotos are an extremelly dangerous species, the Storm Bringers: they're known for their strong magic, their beauty, quick learning, immunity to lightning, and the skill to use their tough claws to sink boats and climb sea cliffs during raining season. They always get bolder with their attacks during storms so it used to be believed their magic was strong enough to create storms (it was not).

Storm Bringers are very attached and loyal to their families but they tend to grow distant as they mature, switching the attention to their mate instead, but if there is still a lot of love and respect for the family (a rare thing), the mermaid will show off their partner to their siblings or parents. The family can kill the partner if they don't think they picked someone good enough.

Teru never even hint of wanting to show Akane to their siblings because as a human, Akane would absolutely get a 'this dude can't even swim', and even Tiara could easily kill him.

The most capable man eaters have an androgenous beauty, so while Teru had decided to be seen as a boy to have something in comun with Akane, they aren't actually a boy, nor do they care about the notion of gender, many people would not be off the mark to assume they are a 'girl', since the goal is to attract as much prey as possible, those who consider themselves only attracted to women included. Teru is lucky to be very beautiful naturally, but many man eaters 'dress up' in shells and pearls to be more attractive.

Kou is a man eater too, and he is more similar to the 'ariel' of the fic, in the sense that he is curious and intrigued by humans as more than a food source. Kou's mate is Hanako, a fellow mermaid, and Teru did nearly kill him (mostly because Teru doesn't like the idea of Kou abandoning them, Teru has nothing personal agaisnt Hanako as an existence here) the two lives in a nice cave in a far away island, and they hunt together because Hanako is paranoid Kou will end up trusting a human and get himself killed.

Hanako is a different species, he can eat humans and most fishes, he preffers the taste of people more, but he understands that it is very dangerous, his brother died in a hunting gone wrong, sacrificing himself to save hanako, and even then, Hanako still has a scar on his tail. After he met Kou he started hunting again to show off that he is a good predator, and get a meal Kou can actually eat. He nearly died when he meet Teru, gaining a scar on his stomach and while he is more experienced than Kou, he isn't built like a killing machine, so once Kou get a hang of this he'll become an extremelly dangerous mermaid, just like Teru.

Most mermaid's have shit vision outside water, minamotos included. Teru only properly 'saw' Akane after they enchanted him on chapter one.

I do not have a role for mitsuba but he would have probably been a deep sea mermaid or a sand one, both are species that do not hunt people and aren't too humanoid. They are very cute for mermaid standarts though.

You know, I was just thinking about G's and Vic's routes, and just imagine if mc and G have an affair and G decides to get a divorce to be with mc, how Victoria would feel about that. Dedicating years of your life, your well being and mental health to this person just for them to cheat on you and then you be left alone.

And it is kinda funny and opposing that, if Vic engage in an affair with mc, it can be "justified" (or at least get more empathy from a public pov) because of the way G treats her, but at the same time I can imagine Vic getting canceled because she cheated on the most famous person alive rn

I know we still dont know much about G and their background and maybe this knowledge will change what I said above, but this thought came into my mind and I just wanted to share with you 🥲

It's true that Victoria is the more sympathetic character right now. I definitely feel like Victoria's actions in the affair are more "justified" for lack of better word. Victoria has given so much of herself to G that she was bound to snap eventually. Unfortunately, persona benefits G greatly. People love G. No matter what happens, most people will be on G's side just because they have more fans. Even if they were to divorce on amicable terms, Victoria would be villainized. She knows this.

I can't say G is completely oblivious to this and doesn't use it to their advantage. I don't want to believe that G is that cruel (she says as if she isn't the literal author lol) but....G can be cruel without intentionally meaning to be.* They get into self-preservation mode and they can't control who they hurt in order to save them from themself.

Anyway. Your question wasn't really a question and my answer wasn't really an answer but it's nice to talk about ValenReign like this. I get a lot of inspiration from real life relationships I've experienced as I was growing up. Granted, no one was famous, but it's interesting (and sad) to see how self-destructive people can be when forced into a corner...

As an aside, I was listening to Norman Fucking Rockwell (10/10 song) while writing this and it's super fitting in a way. Especially the line, Why wait for the best when I could have you? SO Victoria coded...
